Membership

Currently (January 2012) DSMIG has around 150 members. Most are from the UK and Ireland but some are from further afield. We hold two 'members only' scientific meetings every year. One in London and one at a regional base. Each consists of roundtable discussion; specialist presentations; and a number of short presentations about research in progress/audit findings etc. The meetings are accredited for CPD. They are informal and interactive and members are expected to contribute. Meeting fees are held at the minimum necessary to cover costs. Details of forthcoming meetings are advertised on the Noticeboard.

Members receive a newsletter and have password access to the dedicated members area of the website. Information from meetings - power point etc - is posted on this section of the site, particularly bearing in mind those members who cannot attend meetings on a regular basis. We are also developing a forum discussion area for members. The annual membership fee is £25.

We have recently widened our membership base to include all healthcare professionals who have a special interest in Down’s syndrome and who are prepared to be proactive within the group. All new members need to be sponsored by a steering group member. Non healthcare professionals with an interest in the syndrome and our major sponsors and supporters are welcomed as honorary associate members, can attend specialist presentations at meetings, and are kept in touch with our activities through the newsletter and personal communication. For reasons of confidentiality however they will not have access to activities involving case discussion or to the members’ section of the website.

The membership as a whole has contributed to all DSMIG initiatives to date. These include development of the Down's syndrome insert for the PCHR; the DSMIG guidelines for basic essential clinical surveillance, and the UK Down's syndrome growth charts.

We run an information service for healthcare professionals. Its many resources include a confidential database of interested healthcare professionals - both members and non-members - who can advise about clinical problems and about services available in different geographical areas. We have a few 'black holes' and will shortly list these on site in the hope of attracting new members from these areas.
