A 'classic' first published in 1982. For a long time this was undoubtedly the definitive work for parents of children with Down's syndrome. Very sympathetically written it is a positive and practical book. A radically revised edition came out in 1988 bringing medical and therapeutic aspects up-to-date. However some of these aspects are inevitably out of date in 2001. Nevertheless the sections on family reactions and coping are as relevant as they ever were and basic information about the characteristics of the syndrome, personality and temperament, and mental, motor and social development remain highly relevant. The book is based on good scientific background resources and is still a well worthwhile read.
